It’s a sad day…

Posted on Tuesday 15 April 2008

Just got news from the Canadian Press  that Rick Hillier - Chief of Canada’s defence staff has stepped down, submitting his resignation.

While it isn’t the end of the Military in Canada, it most certainly is an end to a capable, savvy, and determined military man who has done more to bring Canada’s military into the 21st century than any before him, and likely any to follow.

Thank you General, for your efforts and dedication.  You have, and continue to serve your country faithfully and will always have my respect.

I saw that and am saddened by his resignation. Hillier was a real military man and was not interested in furthering his career by pleasing the politicians. He is a no-nonsense guy and a refreshing change from some of the more “politically correct” Chiefs of Defence Staffs that have run our military in previous years. He was straight forward in his commitment and the sort of guy that if I was a soldier, would like to have leading the way. As they say in the navy, “Bravo Zulu General Hillier” . (For the un-enlightened it means a big well done).

Indeed, I think I am the one whom sent you the e-mail today when I read the news. Aye, he is/was/always will be a Soldier’s Soldier!
