It’s the 4th of July now, and the Canada Day long weekend has drawn to a close, and ended up in a stinky pile called “Monday disguised as a Tuesday.” What this means is – a new work week with too few hours and too much work.

The last few days have been very reflective for me. I spent the last day of July remembering an old friend who left us 10 years ago. Most moving was not the family getting together to remember Bill and celebrate his spirit – but was that we were included in that family event. Bill was a character, and a cool dad – though he (like many of us) had a few too many bad habits.

That I was invited and am still a part of his family along with my wife and soon to be son also highlighted the time that has passed, and roads we’ve taken as individuals and as friends in the years since high-school, and how much I have changed from the kid I was when I met Bill. He was a cool Dad (and Faye a cool Mom) and as many times as Aud has bemoaned her parents decisions over the years – they were and are still great people.

No surprise then, when I see the strength they’ve shown and been through Paul’s injuries and recovery – and moreso how they have included us along the way. There is still a long way to go for Stumpy – but he has (in my opinion – if not his or his physio-terrorists) hit a milestone. Paul got his new ride last week. Enjoy it dude – you’ve worked yourself silly, and you’ve earned it. Along with it – you’ve earned back your independance, and proven the strength of your character. You’ve taken no prisoners, and cried no fouls. For that Ferris Bueller – you’re my hero. And the fact that I get to hang with you and your kid is just cool with me.

Now about the car… please don’t drive it anywhere near me, or my loved ones. You aren’t a very good driver – and that was when you had feet.

Last up on the reflection weekend was a surprise visit from my old buddy Kras. Self described as Bruce Wayne to my Dick Grayson Kras was a guy that taught me a few things about real life. While not always the smartest arrangement – we have had a few very entertaining weekends on the road, and many a late night at the keyboard. Getting to meet his wife and daughter at last this weekend was wonderful. You’ve done well. Take care of them friend – and they will forever take care of you. Your soul looked well. Nice change. Again – a great reminder that what was will always contribute to what is – but isn’t necessarily what would be.
Cheers all – have a good Monday dressed up as a Tuesday – see you Wednesday!

“Awww Dad! Do we have to? Uncle Paul is gonna chase us around with the stumps again – last time we were there – he stuck them in the dip!”

I see the Hula Girl made it to the TV too! SWEET. She’s been along for the whole ride – from the dash of the G-Wagen to the hospital and home. She’s symbolic of the whole ordeal, so we’re all (those of us who’ve ridden this out) going to get her tattooed to remember the whole thing. (Something retro and cool…) I’ll be talking that one over with my artist when I get my Salmon finished next month. Can’t wait to show that one off.

You know – the Military (bless them) had a little issue the first time I put up a pic of Paul smiling. This time – I don’t care.

This is the first photo I have of Paul and Aud together since the blast.

I’ve known Aud for over (gasp) 17 years, and I’ve seen her in some rough times. More that she deserves. On the flipside though – she’s also been a picture of strength and pride – and for that I love her that much more. Paul has been a great man for her (despite her objections) and I couldn’t ask for better friends.

Nice to have you home Paul. And thanks for leaving the feet in Afghanistan – they were gross dude.

February 23
I’m okay

I came home today because I presume they needed my bed and I was well enough. I am doing fine – little limp and have to wear a brace on my lower arm for now – but I’m cool. I get to be an ‘out’ patient in a short bit. Jeff and Paul are both good as they come along in their recovery, but they are both alive and doing well. I am very thankful for the quick response of my comrades and i couldn’t be here today if they were not there.

So, I am home now and very thankful for it. Thank all of you for your support and your caring attitude – i couldn’t have recovered so quickly without you. Keep your prayers going for Paul and Jeff as they stuggle through their own battles. Thank you once again.

-Will

Paul and Bailey are now kickin back with the Iraqui superbug bacteria – but whatever. It adds a few days to the whole process – but in the end we’re all hopeful it’s just a little speedbump. Soon bud – home soon.

On the flipside – check out my boy B’s band – LongWayDown at myspace… good stuff if you’re into the Hard Alt/Rock scene.

It’ been a long 9 days – but 9 days is what is has been since we got the harried and frantic call from Aud telling us that Paul – her husband – and our friend had been in a bomb blast and was alive – but seriously wounded.

Since that time – I’ve tried to keep this log up to date, not just for me – but for Paul – who will need to see what went on at home – while he was receiving care in the ‘Ghan – and Germany.

A new friend of Pauls – whom he hasn’t even met – my buddy Lance has also been helping – by creating a media archive of all the newscasts and news reports we could get recorded from the first day on.

Where am I going with this – right…

So – as of sunset today – Paul is home – and in the care of the University hosptial. He has a limited visitation schedule but I’m going to try to get a few hours / minutes with him tomorrow – and will likely post a photo or two – if he’s game. I know the others are still in very serious condition – but I’ll leave their stories to their families. Sal has quite a following online…

So… last of all – this image from the media – the last I’ll repost. (Ok. Unless they are relevant) Now – we look forward. Recovery will be a long road – and I’ve committed to Paul, Aud, Darren, and Simon – that I’ll do everything in my power to help…

Welcome home bud.

So – being sick as a dog the last 3 days didn’t help the updates – sorry all.
Everyone has been improving steadily – and the guys are on their way home today! CBC has confirmed the guys are enroute – and should be back in Edmonton by mid-day today. They will be headed directly to hospital for further treatment, and I’m sure Darren will have more information by late in the day. I will not be meeting them at the hospital – since I’m so sick I could risk their recovery… in just a few days – I’ll be well enough to visit – and that’s just fine with me – so long as they are home safe.

Update : 11:30am Yeah – wait 5 minutes – everything changes… it may be later in the afternoon than we thought – but it looks like all 3 are inbound from Ramstein… (Story here) and again… More detail on the delay…

Non-Paul note:Stomach of steel? Not easily disturbed or offended? Check out Rubber Johnny and no – this has NOTHING to do with my fathers upcoming birthday… really… it doesn’t… Rubber Johnny is not quite right with the universe… and I’m not kidding. It’s not for the easily disturbed.

So – Chris Lambie got his story after all – he called me to verify some of his early info – and couldn’t – since Paul never mentioned to me where he was born. I knew he’d grown up in alberta – but wasn’t aware that he was transplanted here young. Nice to see more from his family. (See article here)

News released earlier today confirms what we heard from Paul about the state of his right (only) full leg. The CBC is reporting that while the doctors are working daily to keep it viable – there may simply be too much damage. If the leg needs to be amputated – it will likely be done here in Canada. Sounds like Will “Sal” Salikin is making some progress also – but we’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed for both he and Jeff Bailey – who appears to still be in rough shape. Guys – we’re pullin’ for ya, we’re all in this together – keep your stick on the ice!
